A Significantly Important and Rare 18th Century French Sleigh Form Crown Chair

About the Item

This outstanding piece of French Nobility history with its opulent hand painted lacquered decoration featuring classical figures and motifs, set upon a deep, dark olive green background in gilt. The sweeping sleigh back form and wide, open seat, resplendent in time worn lush burgundy velvet, the Ducal Crown appliqué is embroidered to the back with gold thread. Created during the reign of King Louis XVI 1774 – 1793 (and understood to have been the property of one of the last Dukes of the French Nobility prior to the French Revolution and the ascendance of Napoleon Bonaparte), the use of the classical Greek and Roman figures and symbolism being very much of the fashion of the time and pays homage to the art and furniture being created for Queen Marie Antoinette that was used to furnish the Apartments at the Palace of Versailles. The sculptural, almost chariot inspired seat is set upon scroll feet, padded with horsehair and upholstered in the original velvet, which has been well worn over time and remains to tell the story of the centuries that this exceptional piece of furniture has lived through. Other than a new feather and down seat pad that we have had made by our upholsterer, the chair is absolutely in its original, unrestored and untouched condition, very much of the châteaux. The seat is very stable and structurally sound, there is wear to the lacquer, and signs of historic worm that have been thoroughly treated. It is offered in completely original condition, truly a one-off work of art and an important piece of France’s glorious Royal history. The chair was from the personal collection and estate of the late Georg Wissinger (1933-2023) one of the preeminent antiques and antiquities dealers in the United Kingdom.
