About the Item

A pair of armchairs designed by Jaroslav Šmídek, model 53, produced by TON in Czechoslovakia during the 1960s. These striking examples of mid-century Czech design feature sculptural bentwood armrests and a bold, graphic upholstery that pays homage to the era’s artistic energy. The frames are crafted from solid beechwood, fully restored, and finished with a hand-applied satin matte varnish that highlights the natural grain and character of the wood. The new upholstery is “Convexe” velvet by Casamance – a premium fabric with a geometric, Arty-inspired pattern that combines angular and curved forms in rich, layered colors. The fabric is exceptionally soft to the touch, while also durable and suitable for everyday use. These chairs have been professionally restored and upholstered, ready for immediate use. Their dynamic lines and vivid textile make them statement pieces for any modern or vintage-inspired interior. Custom orders are available upon request. Clients may choose from a wide selection of alternative fabrics and wood finishes. Fabric swatches and wood stain samples can be found at the end of the image gallery. Please note: all custom orders are final and non-returnable. Made in Czechoslovakia. Fully restored.

1960s Mid-Century Czech Armchairs, a Pair
By Jaroslav Smidek
Located in High Point, NC
Produced in the former Czechoslovakia, this essential 1960s design is attributed to Jaroslav Šmídek. Comfortable angles and clean lines are designed to delight, influenced by the mid-20th Century Modernist movement in Central Europe. These low-profile armchairs are re-upholstered in updated neutral fabrics, chosen to compliment the elegant polish of the hardwood frame. Produced by various manufacturers and explored by generations of designers, the bentwood shape is infused with dynamism and movement, reflecting the origins of the technique and the optimism of the industrial revolution-- steam bent furniture was a technological innovation developed by the Thonet Brothers...
