Upholstered Mid-Century Modern Armchair, Europe 20th Century

About the Item

European designers led the way in furniture design innovation and style during the mid-century period. They combined traditional craftsmanship, minimalist design and the highest quality materials with the inspiration brought on by new industrial technologies. Wingback chairs, originating in the 17th century, have maintained their popularity throughout most design eras to this day, and their inclusion in mid-century modern design is no surprise. Originally, the wingback style was created as a way to help shield a person from drafts of cold air, and to trap the heat from a fireplace. That is why wingback chairs are sometimes called fireside chairs, as it was a popular style of chair to have pulled up in front of or flanking a fireplace. Additionally, this piece has the characteristics of mid-century modernism, with soft, cosy upholstery decorated with seven buttons tufted in two rows, and angular, yet rounded edges that enhance both the visual and physical appeal of the chair. The embracing back and the curved arms create a welcoming impression, while the back’s elongated corners create visual interest. The generous padded armrests add another layer of relaxation for the sitter, and the luxurious, soft upholstery provides great comfort in the name of functionality, while also transforming the chair into a beautiful addition to any interior space. The dark, tapered legs ensure stability, and allow the chair’s body to shine as the focal point. This chair’s main decorative element is the design itself, unique yet timeless. With wedge and hammer, the chair-maker slowly creates shorter pieces to be worked into the seat, spindle, crest rail, and legs. This pair of wooden armchairs stands as a proud example of traditional design practice; their solid nail-free joints highlight the skill and artistry of its makers. This construction method enhances the armchairs’ structure and presents the reverence it deserves. This set borrows from great past examples, such as the Windsor chair or - more broadly - the spindle models widely used throughout Europe during the 20th century. These elements render this specific design truly timeless. They are among the most recognisable models of mid-century chairs in Europe. The spindle chairs are a ubiquitous classic that does just as well in the living room, dining room or even the hall, drawing every eye to it. The proportions are well-thought-out, and the see-through design adds a simple and airy touch. Each chair of this set has fifteen symmetrically arranged wooden slim spindles that form the back and armrests.
