About the Item

This rare high back armchair made of Oregon Pine is without a doubt among the great Swedish chair designs. The pine structures shows Ekström’s background as a wood carver, sculptor and architect. The unique details make this chair a stunning representation of the Swedish designer’s craftsmanship and creativity. The spindles comprising the backrest are very successful at adding airiness and visual interest. The chair comes apart easily and packs very compact making them very suitable for people moving regularly. Marked at the bottom of the seat. With colleagues like Aalto, Mathsson, Jacobsen and Kjaerholm, Yngve Ekström was part of the post-war modern movement that made the concept “Scandinavian Modern” world-famous. His furniture is represented in many permanent collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some minor scratches and discoloration on the wood. The chair needs reupholstery. Our skilled craftsmen can upholster the chair in your favorite fabric, but you can also choose to have it done yourself. Please reach out for more information. About the designer: Yngve Ekström (June 16, 1913 in Hagafors, Småland - March 13, 1988) was a Swedish furniture designer, wood carver, sculptor and architect and an important figure in the evolution of the Scandinavian Modernism movement. Nordiska Kompaniet 'Hytte' Armchair in Solid Pine, Swedish Modern, 1940s
By Nordiska Kompaniet, David Rosén, Axel Einar Hjorth
Located in The Hague, NL
This rare armchair was produced by the Swedish company Nordiska Kompaniet in the early 1940s. It belongs to the 'Hytte' series, which is documented in several NK catalogs and advertisements from the time. The Hytte series was a continuation of Axel Einar Hjorth's Sportstugemöbler ("sports cabin furnishings"), a collection of pinewood furniture designed for country homes. After Hjorth, designer David Rosén carried on this style, creating several series for Nordiska Kompaniet. Crafted entirely from pinewood, the chair features club-shaped, tapered legs connected by stretchers, a slatted and slightly curved backrest, and carved armrests. It is versatile and can be used as a desk chair or an elegant side chair. The chair remains in completely original condition, with a natural and even patina on the pinewood. It shows minor wear consistent with age and use. One of the four furniture...
