19th Century French Louis XVI Neoclassical Painted Armbench ~ Vanity Bench

About the Item

19th century French Louis XVI Neoclassical Painted Armbench ~ Vanity Bench was originally designed for the vanity, but its versatility allows it anywhere a convenient seat is required that does not take up much room. The spirit of the Neoclassical Revival is evident in the styling and architecture of the piece, with just a subtle hint of ancient Egyptian influence on the tops of the uprights blending with the ancient Greek and Roman motifs that pervade the design. The armrests are rolled over and fully upholstered down to the bench seat, all of which are covered in a luxurious pattern silk fabric that remains in very serviceable condition. A most unusual design aspect is the suspended gallery rail across the back that provides structural enhancement with stylistic flair, comprised of turned spindles framed above and below like a baluster. Banded laurels are carved into the apron in front on the same horizontal plane as the gallery rail, while the remainder of the elements are vertical, and include acanthus plumes, scrolls, spiral fluting and tapered legs with straight flutes and teardrop feet. The painted finish has achieved a lovely patina, especially with the gold highlighting on the carved accents to create an opulent yet timeless effect. circa 1890s Measures:  33H x 44W x 17.5D; seat 20H.
