About the Item

An elegant and authentic bentwood bench/sofa by the celebrated Austrian manufacturer J. & J. Kohn, dating to the turn of the 20th century. This exceptional piece exemplifies the artistry and innovation of the bentwood furniture movement, which defined the aesthetic of early modern design. The bench features a gracefully curved solid frame, meticulously steamed and bent into a fluid and continuous form that is both visually light and structurally sound. The design is characterized by its elegant silhouette, with a shaped backrest that adds a distinctive flair. The seat and backrest are crafted from meticulously hand-woven cane, which is in excellent vintage condition, offering both comfort and a timeless, natural texture. Dimensions W119 cm / 46.85 in , D65 cm / 25.59 in, H105 cm / 41.34 in SH49 cm / 19.29 in, SD49 cm / 19.29 in Founded by Jacob and Josef Kohn, the firm was a fierce competitor to Thonet and a significant force in the bentwood industry. Their pieces, particularly those from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are highly sought after by collectors and interior designers for their quality, design integrity, and historical significance. The original J. & J. Kohn stamp is visible on the underside, a testament to its authenticity and provenance. This bench is a perfect addition to a variety of interiors, from a minimalist modern space to a classic Art Nouveau or Vienna Secession-inspired setting. It functions beautifully as a unique bench in an entryway, a statement piece at the foot of a bed, or as an elegant seating option in a living room. A true masterpiece of early 20th-century design.
