About the Item

This striking armchair is a fine example of 19th-century Empire furniture, marrying neoclassical authority with updated decorative luxury. The frame, likely crafted from mahogany or another dense tropical hardwood, is finished in a deep, lustrous French polish, emphasizing the refined linearity and powerful profile typical of the Empire style. The design is accentuated by carved lion heads at the terminus of each armrest—an unmistakable neoclassical motif symbolizing strength and regality. The front legs taper elegantly into paw feet, subtly echoing the leonine theme. The chair’s structure is architectural, with slightly splayed rear legs and a squared backrest that envelops the sitter in a semicircular embrace. The overall silhouette calls to mind Directoire and Empire bergères of the early 19th century, yet this piece shows the influence of early Art Deco in its measured restraint and attention to surface finish. Upholstered in a geometric trellis-patterned cut velvet, the textile appears to be a high-end reproduction fabric or possibly an original woven pile velvet, possibly from Scalamandré or a comparable luxury house such as Clarence House or Brunschwig & Fils. The diamond latticework in forest green atop an ivory ground evokes the opulence of Napoleonic interiors while offering a sense of modern crispness. This particular pattern is reminiscent of archival French velvets, possibly inspired by Savonnerie or Lyonnais textile traditions. The dense pattern and tactile quality of the pile lend the piece both visual richness and tactile warmth.
