18th Century Country Lambing Chair
About the Item
This lovely country farm oak lambing chair was found in Wales, UK.
From the 17th to the 19th century, these chairs were commonplace in British farmhouses. When the farmer was tending to his pregnant ewe, he would rest in his lambing chair in front of his blazing fire and the wingback would protect him from the drafty doors behind him.
The chair conceals a deep drawer to the front which the farmer would lay a bed of hay. If a new lamb was born hyperthermic he would place him in the drawer where he would be kept warm and tended to.
A wonderful agricultural farmhouse chair and conversation piece.
