About the Item

Direct from France, a very unique French antique chair, with outstanding hand carvings, known as a French “smoking chair”, or “Fumeuse”, “chaise de fumeur”.~ ~ Aristocrats had these specialty chairs created for their use when smoking cigars, pipes or cigarettes.~ ~This fumeur was hand carved with exquisite details, the splat featuring a dimensional carved Breton character with hat, above two crossed pipes!!~ ~Twin barley twist post stiles frame the splat and support the upper back rail. Rail features carved scrolls and stippling, and flips open to reveal storage for pipes, tobacco, etc.~ ~Barley twist legs and barley twist cross stretchers with carved block joints (what an outstanding piece for a barley twist aficionado)~ ~Brass tacks surround edges of upper upholstery and lower seat upholstery~ ~Excellent conversation piece for any room!!~ ~Well built by craftsmen of the period~ ~circa 1890~ Measurements 34.5”height x 18”across the seat front x 17.5”. 18” approx. seat height.
