Late 19th Century French Hand Carved Oak Child's Chair with Needlepoint Seat

About the Item

This late 19th century French oak child's chair features a seat back with hand carved rosettes at the corners, scrolling leaves, a central rosette, and finials. The seat rests on turned legs joined by a turned H-stretcher. A hand carved panel joins the front legs and is detailed with scrolling and leaves. Upholstered in its original needlepoint with flowers and leaves and finished with nail head trim, circa 1880.

Rosettes adorn the die joints, and grapes and grape leaves embellish the drawer fronts. A shell and leaf motif lends additional detailing to the beveled edge of its top. Its top lifts up to reveal a white marble surface where desserts were displayed and is held in place with two hinged supports. Standing on classic Louis XIII barley twist legs that rest on ball feet, this piece features dovetailed drawers with hand carved pulls as well as two lower levels for additional display space.
