Late 19th Century French Renaissance Style Hand Carved Walnut Dagobert Chair

About the Item

Of a rare smaller scale, this late nineteenth century French Dagobert chair was originally used by a young lady for needlework. The Dagobert chair is so named after the throne chair of King Dagobert I, the French king who reigned during the seventh century. Constructed of hand carved walnut, this chair features a slatted curved seat and back. The back of the seat is detailed with a large volute decorated with a shell and grimacing masks. The seat is supported by scrolling legs with a central finial. Scrolling feet are joined by a lower X stretcher, adorned with a central finial. The chair is additionally detailed with acanthus leaves. circa 1870.
