Pair of 19th Century French Empire Period Hand Carved Walnut Bergeres, Armchairs

About the Item

From a home in Versailles, France, this pair of early nineteenth century French Empire period bergeres or armchairs is constructed of solid walnut with a rich patina that only comes with age. These chairs feature beautifully hand carved armrests detailed with curved fluted corners and Egyptian water leaves. The die joints below the armrests boast carved palmettes. Recently upholstered in France, its gently curved back, arms, and seat are upholstered in a neutral colored patterned velvet. The legs are flared "en sabres", or in English, "like sabers." A handsome pair of bergeres, circa 1810.
