Antique 17th Century William & Mary Carved Oak Child's Wainscot Chair Yorks 1690

About the Item

A very charming antique late 17th century William & Mary period carved oak wainscot child's chair, Yorkshire, circa 1690. A darling chair made for a child during the reign of King William & Queen Mary (1689-1702) from Yorkshire, most likely Leeds, the back having a twin scrolled top crest with a central 'pear' shaped finial, to the sides are incised carved 'ear' shaped brackets. The tall back having a deeply carved back panel with a central floral motif flanked with fruiting vines and stylized oak leaves, below is a small Fleur-de-lis design to the base. The seat has been covered with leather sometime in the 19th century, the legs are turned with balusters & blocks and there is a high stretcher allowing the infant to climb ladder like to be seated. Condition is very good, this rare & unusual chair is robust & sturdy and will even support an adult! The chair was acquired from a 17th century country estate on the outskirts of the small quaint city of Ripon in North Yorkshire, which is the third smallest city in England and has its roots dating back to the middle of 7th century.
