Father Wind Spinning Chair

About the Item

This wooden chair was made in the late 1800s and was used for spinning yarn; hence the name "Spinning Chair". Made with strong oak wood; elegant, rich hand-carvings cover the chair head to toe. As the tail would tell us, these chairs were made in the Black Forest of Germany--the Father of the Wind is depicted as the back. He is taking a deep breath in of fresh air and new possibilities, as each season passes he is there to support the changing of the wind. Each season calls for different winds and temperatures, which meant new clothes, and Father Wind was there to support those spinning the yarn for the new seasons. Father Wind is depicted as a Grotesque to to ward off evil and as a reminder of the separation of the earth and the divine; which are often confused for gargoyles, but are two different things. These chairs welcomed each season with optimistic flow, and banished anything that was not apart of that flow. Price is for the pair of chairs together; not separately. Sculptural Patinated Oak Spinning Chair, Europe Ca Early 20th Century
Located in Utrecht, NL
The ‘spinning chair’, this historic type of seating has had numerous modern interpretations across Europe, however, most preserved the main functional characteristics: solid wood, enduring, high quality craftsmanship, a tall, straight back for good posture and freedom of movement. The art of spinning yarn is thousands of years old, but the spinning wheel as we know it is estimated to have arrived in Europe around the middle of the 13th century and along with it came the three or four-legged spinning chair. The backs were often hand carved with various motifs or fantasy creatures making each one unique and individual. As this oak chair shows, the Modernist movement influenced the traditional design by removing most of the intricate decorative elements, and substituting them with a more streamlined structure. The carved high back and octagonal seat...
