Gerrit Rietveld Inspired Crate Chair, Study Piece by a Student

About

Rietveld put a big stamp on Dutch Design history and still inspires many young students of design and carpenter and woodwork courses to build their own Rietveld chair during their study time

This example was made during the last decade and is not an 'original' licensed production but a study piece by a student

Well and sturdy made of matted grey lacquered pinewood

In the early 1930s during the Economic crisis Rietveld saw shipping crates as a fine recyclable material that could be used by everybody to construct their own chair

Rietveld produced furniture made of “straight-cut” crate boards. With its simple lines and angled back and seat "dictated” by the materials he was working with.

It was revolutionary for those days to sell the crate chair as a do-it-yourself kit, and that it was deliverable in various colors, a predecessor of what we now call Ikea

Although you can buy officially-licenced versions of Rietveld crate chair, you can also construct one yourself using plans you’ll find in the Dutch/English Edition of How to Construct Rietveld Furniture

Rietveld's social design thinking is a typical Dutch heritage that still inspires young people today.
