About the Item
Pair of Irish Chippendale style chairs in white oak, ca. mid to late 18th century. These were most likely made for a country squire, as their more naturalistic and rustic bearing sets them apart from the period archetype. Seat rails and apron are cyma carved with drop in plank seats. The stoutly turned front legs emanate from the corner blocks to terminate in club feet and are joined by bobbin turned stretchers to the simple outswept legs, which support the rear. The unusual back splat is interlaced with a central carving of the ancient symbol “Litha”, which honors the sun and summer solstice of Celtic lore. The top rail is crested with a scallop shell, itself a centuries old emblem of the pilgrimage tradition in Ireland.
