Pair of Indian Repoussé Silver Upholstered Chairs

About the Item

Pair of Indian repoussé silver upholstered chairs Indian, 19th Century Height 97cm, width 71cm, depth 62cm Made from silver in 19th century India, this pair of chairs is adorned with a plethora of complex motifs and is a demonstration of the outstanding skills of Indian craftspeople. The repoussé silver frames are decorated with abundant foliage motifs, which include depictions of various flowers and plants, including grape vines. The backrest is topped by a circular disk depicting an eagle. The disk is flanked by two ‘s’ shaped forms. The reverse of the backrests reveals further repoussé ornamentation, made similarly to the other parts of the seating. A large, crown-shaped panel is filled with two upright lions, in the centre of which is a shield. The animals appear as if they are guarding the shield, a motif popular in numerous coats of arms such as that of Belgium. Surrounding the crown-like canvas are floral patterns. The armrests are formed in the shape of identical lions, lying down and protecting the seater. The detailing on the lions is pared down in comparison to the rich foliate design surrounding them. However, the smallest details such as the hair or the head’s features are superbly depicted giving a life-like appearance. Their tails are slender and extend over their bodies up to their heads, acting as an armrest. Each lion has glass eyes furthering the realistic appearance of the animals. Certain parts of the chairs are upholstered in red bright red fabric with gold detailing. This colouration contrasts with the shining silver creating an interesting aesthetic. Four legs support the construction of each chair. At the back are two sabre legs, while two cabriole legs are at the front. The cabriole legs terminate in lion paw feet. All legs are decorated similarly to the rest of the furniture pieces. The all-around decoration of these chairs makes them exceptionally suitable to act as statement pieces in the appropriate interior.
