About the Item

A rare modern chair prototype designed by Paul McCobb for Calvin Furniture Co. Dated in pencil 6-8-1962 on the underside. Danish Scandinavian style with beige woven leather strapping on a mahogany wood frame. A brass stretcher design connects the tapered legs. Calvin Furniture Co. of Grand Rapids, MI was founded in 1953 and closed in 1973. This design was only in production for a brief period which makes this chair a unique item for modern furniture collectors. Dimensions: 35.25”h x 22.75”w x 22”d x 24” arm height x 17.5” seat height x 19.25” seat depth. In good condition. Provenance: This chair is from the personal collection of designer Ralph Rye who acquired it directly from the Calvin Furniture Co. in Grand Rapids when the Imperial Factory building closed. Ralph Rye is a multi-talented visionary with a career in city planning, architecture, interior design, lighting, and furniture design. Rye has collaborated with some of the finest furniture companies in America including Dunbar, Nessen, Thonet, Jens Risom, and Baker.
