About the Item

An early modern armchair prototype designed by Paul McCobb for Calvin Furniture Co. Circa 1962. Danish Scandinavian style with beige woven leather strapping on a mahogany wood frame with tapered legs. Calvin Furniture Co. of Grand Rapids, MI was founded in 1953 and closed in 1973. This design was only in production for a brief period which makes this chair a unique item for modern furniture collectors. McCobb's work can be found in public museum collections, including at Brooklyn Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Dimensions: 35”h x 18”w x 18”d x 24”arm height x 17.25” seat height x 20.25” seat depth. In good condition. Provenance: This chair is from the personal collection of designer Ralph Rye who acquired it directly from the Calvin Furniture Co. in Grand Rapids when the Imperial Factory building closed. Ralph Rye is a multi-talented visionary with a career in city planning, architecture, interior design, lighting, and furniture design. Rye has collaborated with some of the finest furniture companies in America including Dunbar, Nessen, Thonet, Jens Risom, and Baker.
