Unusual hand carved arms on this teak arm chair from Sumatra with a high polish. Circa 1950. Full dimensions; Arm to arm 27″ wide x Leg to leg 30″ deep x seat 16” high x inside seat 21.5″ wide x 19.5” deep x backrest 20” high. Pair available. The price and images reflect the one shown.
This chair was handmade in the spirit of Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese philosophy that beauty can be found in imperfection and impermanence. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. A beauty of things unconventional. It is the opposite of vulgarity. The costs of achieving this kind of minimalism are seemingly inconsistent with its mission of aesthetic humility. This kind of luxury is for a select few: The Emperor of Japan had a Wabi garden. Wabi is for people who already have a lot.
