Sculptural Solid Wood Armchair, Europe ca 1960s

About the Item

This eye-catching chair has a lot of personality, recalling different design styles and eras, including the Arts and Crafts movement, the minimalistic pine models of Axel Einar Hjorth’s Lovö series or the Amsterdamse School. Versatile shapes and forms, seamless joinery, and finally, the material itself defines this chair. The aesthetic medley relies on the latter the most, playing with the different grains and colours of the wood. Uniquely, the full body is constructed of wood, where the seat and back flow naturally as if they were not made from a solid material. This is achieved by the use of individual squares of wood and the highest level of woodworking. This solution also creates a characteristic look as the differently grained and coloured blocks are put next to each other. The legs, arms, and the sides of the back are composed of a single piece of wood, framing the seat and backrest beautifully. The straight lines of the legs are followed by more curvature on the arms and armrests as well as on the “ears” on the top of the chair. While there are numerous forms of ornamentation on this armchair, the design stays coherent thanks to the use of a single material and to the “invisible” joinery techniques. The material and visual quality is maintained throughout the chair, making it truly timeless. If there is a single common denominator for 20th century European design, it is the quality of the execution, the woodwork, and the materials. The fact that so much of the original furniture has survived to the present-day bears testimony to the fact that the woodworkers of the era were second to none in craftsmanship. Born from both adventure and practicality, the safari chair has transcended its 18th-century origins being lugged around the great outdoors to become a beloved icon of design. Here, the classic pairing of the elegant patinated leather is paired with beautiful solid wood to command attention which is partly why this chair style remains popular in contemporary interior design. The design of this pair of remarkable chairs sits in a long tradition of safari chairs. From Eileen Gray to Kaare Klint and Elias Svedberg a lot of great designers have made versions of self-assembled furniture, which probably finds it origin in Indian Roorkhee Chairs used by the British military. The design recalls Pierre Chapo’s “S10” chair...
