About the Item

Rare Josef Hoffmann set of Chairs for Mundus Vienna Austria 1907-1914 Beautiful antique chair by Josef Hoffman for Mundus Vienna Austria. The chairs are in exceptionally good quality for their age, circa 1900s. On the the bottom the chairs still have the original label or part of it. The name "Bielitz" refers to the town of Bielsko-Biała in present-day Poland, which was previously part of Austria and known as Bielitz. Josef Hoffmann, an Austrian architect and designer, was associated with this town. Some of his furniture was marked "J. Hoffman, Bielitz, Austria," indicating it was produced before 1918, when Bielitz was still under Austrian rule. Josef Hoffmann an Austrian bentwood manufacturer who operated his own brand from 1880 until 1907, when his production joined the Mundus Consortium. Dimensions W 46cm/18.11 in, D55cm/21.65 in, H 90cm/35.43 in SD 42cm/16.54 in, SH 48cm/18.90 in Thonet-Mundus was formed through a series of significant mergers in the bentwood furniture industry, becoming the world's largest furniture manufacturer of its time. The story begins with Leopold Pilzer, who, as a junior partner at Rudolf Weill & Co., founded Mundus in Vienna, Austria, in 1907 by merging sixteen smaller bentwood furniture manufacturers with assistance from the Austrian Creditanstalt bank. The economic crisis following the First World War spurred further consolidation. In 1914, Mundus became a majority stakeholder in J. & J. Kohn, a prominent competitor of Thonet (founded by Michael Thonet and renowned for its bentwood furniture). J. & J. Kohn officially merged with Mundus in 1917, forming Kohn-Mundus. Meanwhile, Gebrüder Thonet transformed into the joint-stock company Thonet AG in 1921. The culmination of these mergers occurred in 1922 (or 1924, depending on the source, with the company existing until 1946), when Thonet merged with Kohn-Mundus to create Thonet-Mundus. This newly formed publicly traded company was led by Mundus' founder, Leopold Pilzer. Even after the merger, some furniture continued to be sold under the respective original brand names. The Bystřice factory became the development center for Thonet-Mundus, which continued to export products globally. During this period, Thonet-Mundus adapted its product line to modern demands, with Thonet chairs being lauded for their simplicity and economy. Many eminent designers contributed to Thonet-Mundus's bentwood furniture designs, including Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956), a co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte and a leading figure of the Viennese Secession, as well as Adolf Gustav Schneck and Josef Frank.
