About the Item
Traditional tribal chair of the Swat Valley, Northern Pakistan, 19th century. A chair with low seat height 6 1/2"-inches high to seat, in the typical style of the Swat Valley region in Northern Pakistan, with high straight and richly decorated back rest with turned spandrels. The constituent elements are made of hardwood, are partly decoratively turned and fitted together with wedged mortise and tenon. The seat consists of tightly plaited leather bands.
The upper section of the chair is held together by means of leather straps, which at the same time help stabilizing the back rest.
The front sides of the upper parts are richly adorned with deep chip-carving decorations in relief. Originally, the chair was entirely dyed black. Now it clearly shows very good, old usage patina. Apart from a few torn leather straps in the seat, the piece is otherwise in good condition.
The chair measures 26 1/2"-inches high x 19"-inches wide x 17"-inches deep.
