19th Century Traditional Tribal Chair of the Swat Valley, Northern Pakistan

About

A 19th century traditional tribal chair of the swat valley, Northern Pakistan. A chair with low seat, height measures 6 1/2"-inches, in the typical style of the Swat Valley region in Northern Pakistan, with high, straight and richly decorated backrest. The constituent elements are partly decoratively turned and fitted together with the wedged mortise and tenon. The seat consists of tightly plaited leather bands. The upper section of the chair is held together by means of leather straps, which at the same time help stabilising the back rest. The front sides of the upper parts are richly adorned with deep chip-carving decorations in relief. It clearly shows very good, old usage patina. Apart from a few torn leather straps in the seat, the piece is otherwise in good condition. The chair measures 30"-inches high x 18 1/2"-inches wide x 19"-inches deep.
