New Stock ✅ Robin Day for Hille 1958 Sofa Bed Three Seater Sofa Mid Century Vintage Retro MCM One of Robin Day’s most sought after designs for Hille, it was designed in 1956 and continued to be made into the mid 1960s. The Victoria and Albert museum have this version in their collection which is described as being designed in 1956 and made in 1957 when it won COID Design of the year. Originally called the ‘Convertible Bed-Settee’ this piece was specifically designed with young people in mind who often lived in smaller spaces where dual-purpose space-saving furniture was a must and for this reason it won a Design Centre Award in 1957. The sofa has solid mahogany arms and black metal legs. There are two chrome plated arms attached to its backrest that allow it to rotate backwards converting it into a full sized single bed. Complete with the ‘Hille’ metal stamp and features in the Lesley Jackson ‘Pioneers of Contemporary Design’ book of Robin and Lucienne Day’s life. This beautiful piece has been newly reupholstered in a light grey linen fabric and has new webbing for added comfort. Robin Day is one of the most significant British designers of the 20th century. Since winning first prize in the Storage Section of the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design (organised by MOMA in 1948), Day built a legacy of innovation and forward focused design. As a result of winning the MOMA award, Robin Day was sought out by the cabinet-making firm of S.Hille & Co, and began a partnership that flourished over the ensuing decades. Hille company had specialized in reproduction furniture but with the ambitious young designer on board, Hille completely changed direction and embraced modern design.
