Robin Day for Hille 1958 Sofa Bed Three Seater Sofa Mid Century Vintage Retro MCM
One of Robin Day’s most sought after designs for Hille, it was designed in 1956 and continued to be made into the mid 1960s.
The Victoria and Albert museum have this version in their collection which is described as being designed in 1956 and made in 1957 when it won COID Design of the year.
Originally called the ‘Convertible Bed-Settee’ this piece was specifically designed with young people in mind who often lived in smaller spaces where dual-purpose space-saving furniture was a must and for this reason it won a Design Centre Award in 1957. The sofa has solid mahogany arms and black metal legs. There are two chrome plated arms attached to its backrest that allow it to rotate backwards converting it into a full sized single bed.
Complete with the ‘Hille’ metal stamp and features in the Lesley Jackson ‘Pioneers of Contemporary Design’ book of Robin and Lucienne Day...
