About the Item

De Sede DS-80 Black Leather Daybed – Rare Vintage Swiss Modern Classic (1970s) A strikingly rare version of De Sede’s iconic DS-80 daybed, this all-black edition—featuring both black patchwork leather and a black lacquered slatted wood frame—represents one of the most desirable and hard-to-find configurations of the model. Produced in Switzerland in the 1970s, it exemplifies the house’s commitment to innovation, tactile quality, and enduring design. Artisanal Leatherwork, Signature Patchwork Craft The DS-80’s hallmark is its stunning hand-patched leather upholstery—a sustainable concept pioneered by De Sede in the early 1970s to make use of premium leftover hides from their production process. Each square is individually selected and sewn together with sculptural seams, creating a distinctive tufted matrix that’s both functional and deeply expressive. The supple leather, seen in close-up, shows its grain and creasing beautifully—aged to perfection with a light patina and no structural flaws. Photographs reveal the hand-tied tufting, deep-set buttons, and dimensional folds in the leather that give the piece its iconic texture. Beneath the seat, the signature "de Sede Exclusiv" lining and original foam are revealed by zippered access, affirming its authenticity and vintage provenance. Sculptural Frame, Satin Black Slats Supporting the seat is a minimalist yet architecturally refined slatted wood frame—finished in satin black lacquer and precision-crafted for subtle rhythm and visual lightness. This open design elevates the daybed visually and physically, lending it a floating presence. The glides are designed for both hard and soft surfaces, ensuring versatility in placement. Functional Versatility, Timeless Form The DS-80 is not just admired for its aesthetics—its usability is key to its legacy. The piece can be used as a minimalist daybed, a single-guest sleeper, or styled with modular cushions as a lounger. Its rectilinear form makes it ideal in modern interiors—from gallery-like lofts to rich wood-paneled spaces. Johannes Spalt 'Constanze' Sofa Daybed in Black Leather and Steel
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, sofa or daybed, leather, chrome-plated steel, Austria, 1960s. This mid-century modern sofa is designed by the acclaimed Austrian furniture designer Johannes Spalt. The design is characterized by a solid construction based on sharp lines and angular shapes noticeable in the body of the seat and the chromed steel base, underlining the clear structured design. The metal legs elevate the seat in a graceful way, which establish an open and more transparent look to the whole unit. The tufted seat with buttons is upholstered in black leather. As outcome, this creates more visual interest and adds a graphical touch to the quite simplistic design. By only one hand movement the 'Constance' transforms from a comfortable sofa to daybed. A very elegant and also nifty technique. Johannes Spalt (1920-2010) was a postwar Austrian architect. In 1952 he founded the collective "Arbeitsgruppe 4" together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent and Otto Leitner. Their ideas and designs are still a great example of Austrian architecture...
