Gently Rocking DIning Armchair Inspired By Japanese Tradition
About the Item
This contemporary dining armchair is a unique collection with a curved backrest and soft velvet upholstery. Designed with a gently rocking base, it offers a soothing cradling motion for the sitter. However, Japanese designer Kazuko Okamoto clarifies, "The chair wasn’t designed as a rocking chair. I wanted a fun chair that evokes a sense of well-being, with this lightness also reflected in its design."
Inspired by Japanese Tradition
The concept draws inspiration from the Okiagari Koboshi, a traditional papier-mâché Japanese lucky doll. Known for its ability to wobble but always return upright due to its balanced center of gravity, the doll symbolizes resilience—a quality reflected in its playful yet grounded design.
Aesthetic and Material Harmony
This armchair features clean, airy lines that make it appear light and ethereal. Its rocking base, formed from a wooden semi-circle, is mirrored in the symmetrical curve of the enveloping arms, creating a harmonious and balanced silhouette.
