The Pitchford Hall Chairs
About the Item
Rare and Important set of 10 mid 19th century barley twist oak dining chairs (2 grand carvers and 8 side chairs) retaining their original unique armorial needlework seats and backs of the Ottley family. (The main image only shows 1 side chair repeated, other 7 chairs have unique seats and backs) Designed and made for England's finest half timbered Elizabethan Manor - Pitchford Hall. Many of the seats signed and dated by Ottley family members and one signed 'Worked by Lady Milton'.
An extraordinary assembly of heritage and craftsmanship is embodied in this distinguished set of 10 barley twist oak dining chairs from the 1840s, originating from the historic Pitchford Hall, a Grade I listed Tudor country house renowned for its quintessential Elizabethan half-timbered architecture. This set, comprising 2 grand carvers and 8 side chairs, stands out for its early design within the period, a testament to the high aesthetic standards of the era.
The chairs are particularly significant for their original armorial needlework, a proud display of the heraldry of the Ottley family, whose association with Pitchford Hall dates back to 1473, marking an era of prominence that spanned centuries. The intricate needlework, inscribed with the year '47 on one and another marked with a date from the 1840s, confirms their creation in this decade. Moreover, the presence of Lady Milton's hand in the needlework, before her marriage and name change around 1849/50, adds a layer of personal history and authenticity to these pieces.
These chairs are not simply furnishings but are historical artefacts bearing witness to the passage of time and the narrative of Pitchford Hall. They resonate with the personal touch of the Ottley family members, whose signatures and dates are a direct link to their legacy.
This set is a remarkable survivor of time, echoing the hall's storied past and architectural magnificence, and reflecting a period when it stood as a beacon of national significance during World War II as a suitable retreat for the royal family. These Pitchford Hall chairs not only enhance the estate's historical tapestry but also serve as a symbol of the enduring legacy of the Ottley family and their contribution to the heritage of England.
