About the Item

Of excellent quality, this set of six Chippendale Style mahogany dining chairs are clearly benchmade and entirely hand crafted, probably during the last years of the 19th Century. With only subtle embellishments, the set is relatively austere allowing the clean lines of the classical design to be emphasized. The ears have just soft scrolls in the raised bead of molding flowing around the edge, the very linear pierced splat tied together at the center with a handsomely carved rippled ribbon, the other edge of the Marlborough legs with a single bead emphasized along the corner. The legs are firmly stretched with tenoned side stretchers, the medial stretcher dovetailed into the sides with a half-notch. The finish is quite early, probably original under many layers of wax from years of care, overall the surfaces with a well developed patina and oxidized abrasions throughout now nearly black. The subtle bow of the seat results in a very comfortable chair, each being very sturdy and built to last for future generations if well cared for. Measurements: [arm chairs] 23 1/2" W x 37 7/8" H x 22 3/4" D; 18 1/2" H to seat; [side chairs] 21" W x 37 3/4" H x 22" D; 19" H to seat Condition Report: Upholstery in poor condition with staining and discoloration throughout. Wear to legs of all chairs, the surfaces with a wonderful nicely developed patina under years of waxing. Sturdy and strong in all joints. Plastic pads can be added under some feet to even out the chairs. A gorgeous set of benchmade dining chairs.
