1960's Set of Four Rattan Armchairs and Side Table by Jaroslav Prochazka for ULU

About the Item

This is an original rattan set of furniture from the 1960’s. There is no producer label attached on any piece of this set and so it is unknown to us who designed and produced this set. However this design is very similar to work of two Czech designers - Jaroslav Prochazka and Alan Fuchs. They both were experimenting with rattan at the time but Fuchs usually used rattan only in combination with steel supports. However we believe this piece was designed by Prochazka, who was working as an artist in the department for wooden furniture at ULUV since 1954, had a great knowledge of wooden technology and craft and therefore was able to design contemporary products based on these old traditions and methods. His design was very original and practical, taking the traditional methodologies and creating a fresh contemporary look. The beauty of rattan is in the sculptural quality of the form. In this set, this is exemplified in the table that is supported by three scalloped shaped legs of rattan with a lower shelf, where the pieces come together to form a smaller circle which is both functional and beautiful. The chairs are a wonderful cocooning ‘egg shaped’ lounge chair style, and are perfect for both the garden or a stylish interior. The set is in great vintage condition. There is some patina on the surface of both the chairs and on the table but that actually works well with the natural quality of the material. There are no chips or cracks and each chair is structurally fine without any damage to the construction.
