Danish Lounge Chair with Light Brown Upholstery, Denmark 1940s

About the Item

Danish mid-century modern design is known for its focus on simplicity, functionality, and comfort with a deep appreciation for craftsmanship. The design movement flourished during the 1940s and 1950s, emphasizing clean lines and organic forms, combining natural materials with exceptional quality. Danish designers, in particular, were experts at blending artistic expression with everyday practicality, making their furniture both functional and visually pleasing. This lounge chair, originating in 20th century Denmark perfectly embodies these characteristics. The piece stands as a quintessential example of the style, featuring rounded arms that flow seamlessly into the backrest, creating a soft and inviting silhouette. The upholstery, a light brown fabric with a textured surface, enhances the chair's tactile appeal while maintaining a versatile colour palette that complements a variety of interiors. The curves of the armrests and backrest add to the chair’s welcoming and comfortable form, offering a sense of enveloping cosiness. The beech wooden legs, dark and solid, provide a grounding element to the soft design above. The chair’s overall proportions are balanced and harmonious, and its form appears almost organic, as if shaped by natural forces. The plush upholstery, which wraps the seat and arms entirely, further emphasizes the sense of safety and relaxation that the piece exudes. This chair is not only a place to sit but a piece that brings both warmth and sophistication to its surroundings. As a symbol of craftsmanship, this lounge chair is perfect for modern interiors, offering both style and a homely feel with every use. The Danish modern movement, rooted in the mid-20th century, was not a fleeting trend but a lasting shift in design philosophy. Its principles have not only withstood the test of time but have become foundational for many contemporary design approaches. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Danish Cabinetmaker Lounge Chair in Wool with Footstool, Denmark, circa 1940s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Danish Mid-Century Modern furniture reflected Scandinavian materials and craftsmanship and mixed them with a modern style, and the period from roughly 1940 through 1960 was a high point for Danish furniture makers. This set shows why. This particular chair silhouette has been popular since the 1930s, from around the time Flemming Lassen designed the overstuffed easy chair, the “Tired Man”, for The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Competition in 1935. The curved and organic lines of the design create an elegant silhouette for both the chair and ottoman. The design of this chair is characterized by organic, curved shapes that create a cosy and welcoming sensation. Since the enveloping back forms the arms as well but doesn’t reach all the way to the beginning of the seat, the design is very open and appears light. The gentle lines are highlighted by the soft wool blend upholstery that uniquely covers the entire bodies of the chair and footstool, including the legs as well. As a representation of early modernist seating...

Danish Cabinetmaker Lounge Chair in a Patterned Bouclé Fabric, Denmark 1940s
Located in Utrecht, NL
This beautiful Danish cabinetmaker lounge chair recalls the peak of Danish Mid-Century Modern design. Thanks to its curved shape, this model is exceptionally cosy and elegant. Curved chairs like this are statement pieces in any space, but they can also adapt to a variety of styles thanks to their universal appeal. With its classic shape paired with modern design, the generous size, and fully upholstered body, this lounge chair is outstanding, even when measured to the many beautiful models created in Denmark during the mid-century era. The large, curved design is reminiscent of the Chesterfield style, with rolled arms and a curving back, short feet, and button tufting. While the impression may recall the historic style, it is its more streamlined, modern interpretation with fewer decorative elements and a much lighter colour palette. The stitches on the back create a scalloped look that sections the back, enhancing the voluptuous size. The Danish design idiom, among other things, was centred on gentle yet robust support for the spine - a quality that engender contentment and well-being, a defining characteristic of Danish culture. The visual appearance however, is not the only thing that echoes Danish design, but also the exquisite craftsmanship under the fully upholstered body. The short, mismatched stained beech legs add a modern, organic feel, balancing out the voluptuous profile of the sofa. The front legs differ in their angle and shape from the back ones, adding visual interest, while the masterful sense of proportions and the soft upholstery guarantee functionality and comfort. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The sofa has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric.
