About the Item

Sculptural pair of model 790 chairs designed by Joseph-André Motte and manufactured by Steiner, France 1960. These chairs have a cool boomerang-shaped structure made of solid blond beech wood. The frame is super simple but has awesome details. The vertical back frame is connected to the horizontal one with a diagonal metal bar. The seat and back are held by a sling seat design. The cushions are really comfy, and they've been reupholstered in an off-white bouclé fabric, just like the original design. These chairs not only feel great to sit in, but they also look super nice and stylish. Kindly note that the listed price is for the 2 chairs. French furniture manufacturer Steiner is an internationally recognized furniture company that has collaborated with world renowned designers for the past ninety years, creating modern classics. Charles Steiner was born in 1894 in Bucharest, Romania. He moved to Paris, where he was drawn into the principles of functionalism and the Bauhaus. In 1926 founded his eponymous furniture company in the Parisian suburb of Faubourg St. Antoine. He understood the significance of the modernist and functionalist movements and his designs were hugely influenced byLe Corbusier and Mallet Stevens In 1930, his Constance Chair which featured nickel-plated tubular legs, went into production. Steiner collaborated with the French Avant-garde designer Etienne-Henri Martin, and together the pair designed the SK140 Armchair. Shortly after World War II, Steiner moved away from functionalist design, focusing instead on more contemporary styles that accentuated comfort and user-interaction, utilizing bold colors and curved forms. Like all our upholstered pieces these can also be newly upholstered to your admiration. Ask our experienced upholstery department for an affordable quote for the item you want customized. We only use the best quality fabrics, foam, and materials for all our items. With the reupholstery we will always keep the originality in mind so the piece doesn’t lose its value and will be ready for years of use again.

1960s Mid-Century Czech Armchairs, a Pair
By Jaroslav Smidek
Located in High Point, NC
Produced in the former Czechoslovakia, this essential 1960s design is attributed to Jaroslav Šmídek. Comfortable angles and clean lines are designed to delight, influenced by the mid-20th Century Modernist movement in Central Europe. These low-profile armchairs are re-upholstered in updated neutral fabrics, chosen to compliment the elegant polish of the hardwood frame. Produced by various manufacturers and explored by generations of designers, the bentwood shape is infused with dynamism and movement, reflecting the origins of the technique and the optimism of the industrial revolution-- steam bent furniture was a technological innovation developed by the Thonet Brothers...
