Sergio Rodrigues 'Tonico' Jacaranda, Leather and Alpaca Armchairs, 1960s Brazil
Located in Los Angeles, CA
If you are looking for the most unique and coveted rare pair of armchairs for you or your client, look no further, this pair of Sergio Rodrigues 'Tonico' lounge chairs are the best examples you can find, and we will explain why below. First, this pair was produced under supervision by Sergio in his own factory in Brazil - but - exclusively for the US market, distributed for a very short time by Brazilian Interiors in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the gallery of this listing is a photo of the Brazilian Interiors catalogue that displays this model and confirms production was supervised by Sergio in his own factory in Brazil. The unique attribute on this pair of 'Tonico' lounge chairs is the addition of paddle arms whereas normal production of the Tonico design was without armrests. This addition adds greater comfort to these already incredibly comfortable chairs. Secondly, 'Tonico' lounge chairs, loveseats and sofas are already incredibly rare - this pair with paddle arms are even more exceptionally rare and special. Of Sergio's designs, the 'Tonico' line is the most sought after by collectors and art collectors - this pair possesses greater rarity and also have the additional value of provenance which makes them much more valuable and desirable for collectors over the typical Tonico chairs...

Djinn Armchair & Ottoman Attributed to Olivier Mourgue for Airborne, 1960s
Located in ŁÓDŹ, PL
A rare Olivier Mourgue “Djinn” armchair & ottoman upholstered in new premium fabric from Belgium, wool blend, 1960s. A highly in demand, and hard-to-find Olivier Mourgue “Djinn” armchair & ottoman, newly reupholstered in bouclé fabric, produced by a recognizable Belgium fabric manufacturer. This beautiful set as a part of “Dijin” series is well known for its appearance in “2001: A Space Odyssey” by Stanley Kubrick and is part of Center de Pompidou and the New York’s MoMA collection. Examples of armchairs without armrests are more common, and parts with armrests are much harder to find. This epic piece of modernism from the mid-twentieth century is as beautiful as it is comfortable and will surely become a favorite piece of furniture in your home. Armchair dimensions: Width: 72 cm / 28.34 in. Depth: 77 cm / 30.21 in. Height: 67 cm / 26.37 in. Ottoman dimensions: Width: 72 cm / 28.34 in. Depth: 58 cm / 22.83 in. Height: 40 cm / 15.74 in. About the Designer: Olivier Mourgue (French, born 1939) is a French artist and Industrial designer. Best known for his design of the Djinn line of furniture, Mourgue’s aesthetic is characterized by brightly colored jersey fabric stretched over structural steel frames that are filled with polyether foam, creating a unified, futuristic, alien-like modular form. Born in Paris, France in 1939, he began his career with an innovative design for a chaise lounge in 1964, after which he expanded his original furniture line to include loveseats, stools, and anthropomorphic chairs. Despite also producing paintings and drawings, his career was ultimately dedicated to Industrial Design, and provided a quintessential aesthetic of 1960s Modernist furniture...

New and Vintage Bouclé Lounge Chairs

Vintage bouclé lounge chairs are synonymous with comfort.

Bouclé fabric can be found in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles on 1stDibs. You can also browse our bouclé chairs by designers and firms, including Pierre Paulin, Christian Sorensen, Fritz Hansen and Knoll.

This soft fabric is characterized by an irregular pattern of looped threads that yield its rich texture and volume. The yarn from which bouclé fabric is made — the name is French for “buckled” or “curled” and refers to both the yarn and the fabric — comprises twisted fibers.

Bouclé has been used in furniture to reproduce the look and coarse feel of traditional handwoven textiles since the 1800s. But it was architect and designer Eero Saarinen’s revered Womb chair, crafted for Knoll in the 1940s, that turned this cozy but breathable fabric into a staple of modern furniture design.

Given that Florence Knoll — a revolutionary modernist designer and former protégé of Eero Saarinen's father, Eliel, at Cranbrook Academy of Art — hoped for "something I could curl up in" when she requested what would become the famous Womb chair (and series), could it have been upholstered in anything other than her company's trademark "Classic Bouclé"?

Shop a varied selection of new and vintage bouclé chairs on 1stDibs today.
