About the Item

Pair of ‘Schulz’ easy chairs, designed by Otto Schulz. Produced by Jio Möbler in Jönköping (Sweden), 1940s. Newly upholstered in light sheepskin. Dimensions: Height: 73 cm / 28.74 in Width: 84 cm / 33.07 in Depth: 65 cm / 25.59 in Seat height: 43 cm / 16.93 in The ‘Schulz’ chair combines a classic shape with modern design principles and was highly popular in Sweden during the 1940s. It features a spacious seat and a curved backrest, providing comfort and support. Viewed from the side, the backrest appears to float, supported only by the extended rear legs, giving the chair a distinctive and open structure. First introduced in the mid-1930s, the ‘Schulz’ easy chair was designed by Otto Schulz (1882-1970), a German-born architect and designer who became a defining figure in Swedish interiors. Based in Gothenburg, Schulz founded Boet, a celebrated high-end furniture manufacturer and design studio active from 1920 to 1950, where he served as editor of its namesake magazine, which helped shape the discourse around Scandinavian design in the early 20th century. The chair was initially created by Boet in Gothenburg, where early models were produced entirely in-house. In 1941, production moved to Jio Möbler in Jönköping, a newly established furniture manufacturer that built its reputation on crafting high-quality, hand-upholstered furniture with a focus on longevity and detail. It was during this period that the model became widely known as the ‘Schulz’ chair, taking its name from its original designer, Otto Schulz. Jio Möbler continued making the chair in subsequent years. While the design remained consistent, its maker’s mark shifted, with early examples attributed to Boet, and later editions bearing the Jio Möbler name. Please note that these chairs are reupholstered to order, with a lead time of 12 to 16 weeks to meet our high quality standards. The images show the finished result following restoration by our experienced team. The listing price reflects the finished result as shown. As with all sourced original pieces, the tone and grain of the wood may differ slightly from the images. For more information, feel free to contact us.
