Sculptural Zebrano Plywood Lounge Chair, The Netherlands 1970s

About the Item

The 1970s witnessed the emergence of eccentric furniture pieces that seamlessly blended the avant-garde with practicality. Crafted in the Netherlands, this distinctive lounge chair bears the mark of Dutch ingenuity and artistry, reflecting an era where experimentation in design was the norm. What set this chair apart was not just its striking appearance but the innovative use of Zebrano plywood. The so-called “Zebrano” wood -derived from tropical trees in America, Asia, and Africa, yielding striped hardwood used in cabinetwork - is known for its distinctive dark stripes reminiscent of a zebra's markings, hence the name. In this chair, the zebrano plywood structure takes centre stage, recalling designers Ingmar Relling from Norway because of the wood, and the bentwood designs of Alvar Aalto. Showcasing the wood's natural beauty and unique patterns, the chair's use of Zebrano plywood not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also speaks volumes of the craftsmanship inherent in Dutch design of the era. Plywood, a versatile material, played a pivotal role in the creation of this extraordinary lounge chair. Unlike solid wood, plywood is composed of layers of wood veneer bonded together, making it sturdy and flexible. This flexibility allows for the creation of sculptural, bent wood shapes, which is also the main visual hallmark of this chair's design. The cantilevered structure, with visible screws holding the distinct pieces together, showcases the prowess of Dutch craftsmanship and design. The ingenuity of the Dutch designer is evident in the chair's cantilever design. The back and seat are supported only by the front legs, creating an elegant curve that defies not just traditional expectations but, seemingly, also gravity. The use of plywood allows for this daring structure, showcasing the designer's willingness to push the boundaries of conventional furniture shapes and forms. What truly sets this lounge chair apart is without a doubt is its plywood frame, however the seat also deserves attention: carefully stretched between the sides of the back frame via faux leather straps, the canvas seat assures great ergonomic comfort. Additionally, the brown sheepskin throw is a small, but important visual addition that softens the overall impression. This cosy addition not only enhances the chair's visual appeal but also contributes to its visual and practical comfort. The deliberate visibility of screws adds an industrial touch, embracing the raw aesthetic that contrasts nicely with the organic zebrano wood and fabric. In essence, this Dutch-made cantilever lounge chair from the 1970s is in many ways a testament to the era's spirit of exploration and innovation. It showcases the marriage of unconventional materials like Zebrano plywood with groundbreaking design, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of furniture craftsmanship. The chair also exemplifies the era's commitment to pushing boundaries, making it a rare and individual example of Dutch design brilliance. Condition: In good vintage condition. Sculptural Lounge Chair by Bas Van Pelt 'Attr.', The Netherlands, ca 1950s
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Utrecht, NL
This chair is full of exceptional features and details that make it a unique example of the creative overflow that defined mid-century modernism in Europe. The sculptural design is paired with the organicity of the material and various forms. While the design is no short of exceptional solutions, they are also in service of functionality and comfort. This is a chair of extreme comfort, with multiple joinery and construction techniques. It is a little lower than the standard lounge chair, and that is exactly what provides great ergonomics and aesthetics. The seat and back form an obtuse angle which assures the perfect lounging position. The removable cushions upholstered in brown cow hide add even more comfort, while the fabric’s texture stands out nicely against the smooth wooden surfaces. The flowing structure displays beautifully curved lines and rounded edges that are broken by the straight wooden slats on the back. The perfect balance between the fluid and straight lines is typical of Bas van Pelt’s seating designs. The subtle swirl carvings in the front are playful details that further show off the high level of design and craftsmanship. While the second half of the 20th century saw the takeover of mass production and many - now iconic - futuristic designs, this chair preserves the value and beauty of master craftsmanship and exquisite materials. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair’s cushions have been reupholstered recently in premium cow hide. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Oak Lounge Chair with Striped Cushions, The Netherlands 1960s
Located in Utrecht, NL
This 1960s oak lounge chair, originating from the Netherlands, mirrors typical Dutch mid-century furniture - embodying simplicity and functionality. Mid-century modern furniture was mainly designed with the urban home in mind, and Dutch furniture makers aspired to affect lives with good functional design. This chair has a stunning wooden oak frame, paired with fully upholstered cushions in a premium striped fabric. With a timeless and sturdy design, it is especially successful at balancing modernity and comfort. The composition plays with geometry, combining both the straight and curved lines of the frame with evenly-spaced, straight wooden slats, spherical finials, and legs that are tapered towards the bottom. The details draw attention to the beautiful oak wood colour and grain, whilst the choice of material offers a strong frame and a smooth finish. Oak was a popular material for furniture design in Europe during the mid-century era for several reasons; it is a hardwood that is known for its durability, making it a practical choice for furniture that is designed to last. Additionally, oak has a distinctive and attractive grain pattern that adds visual interest to furniture pieces. The cushions fit snugly within the chair, resting on all sides of the inner frame, providing an extremely comfortable seating experience. The tufting on the upholstery also features buttons that accentuate the design of the luxurious fabric choice. This lounge chair is representative of mid-century craftsmanship from the Netherlands - whilst also being reminiscent of the Eric Merthen “Amiral” chair...
