Phenomenal vintage Chinoiserie hand carved Rosewood Howdah or elephant saddle chair from Bangkok Thailand. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. It has a repaired chip and crack on its front top back rail. It was given a fresh coat of Danish oil. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Mid-20th Century. LOL… ok, most people probably don’t actually have a pet elephant BUT… that shouldn’t detour you from owning a PHENOMENAL hand carved elephant saddle chair or Howdah chair from Bangkok, Thailand!! It is comprised of stunning Rosewood embellished with complexly carved floral motif on the sides of the arms, across the top bar of the back splat, and around the base of the seat. Oh, did you notice? Just take another look at the base of the chair and you will notice that it is carved to resemble an elephant! Highly sculpted elephant ears on each side, a headdress in the center, and the leg supports are carved in a V shape connected with a stretcher baring cross supports which mimic the elephant ears! PHENOMENAL!! Elephants are considered a sacred animal in Thailand and these seats were used most often in the past to carry wealthy people during progresses or processions. It was also a symbol of wealth for the owner and as a result might be elaborately decorated sometimes with expensive gemstones. Its quintessential Chinoiserie style is going to make a BOLD statement in any room whether the in a corner of your bedroom, in the study across from the fireplace, in the entry way, or as an accent chair in the living room. Stunning Late 19th Century Neo Renaissance Style lion head Savonarola Throne chair with a mahogany frame, carved details, & loose seat cushion with original velvety wine colored fabric. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, under the lion on the left (if you are facing the chair) a piece of wood was missing so it was filled & repaired by our artisan staff.
