About the Item

Designed by Giorgio Armani, these side chairs have the same elegant aesthetic the designer is known for. The precision of construction is evident, with a result that feels modern as well as contemporary. Using simple but well-though out lines, this chair was designed to be minimalistic, yet aesthetically distinct. The chairs have an airy feel, while the sturdy frame provides a firm and reliable base, with the overall design focusing on the natural beauty of the wood. In Constructivist design, the artist became an engineer wielding tools, instead of a painter holding a brush. The style is defined by stripped down, geometric forms and modest materials. As these side chairs demonstrate, the style’s visual language is based on geometrical and Minimalist forms that are occupied with reducing the design to its most essential elements. Accordingly, the chairs have an elementary structure consisting of square frames composed of eight pieces of wood. They exude stripped down elegance, with an airy construction that focuses on clean lines and its Material. Chestnut wood is strong, rot resistant and relatively light-weight, with a colouration that is uniquely beautiful. The colour is deep and rich, darkening to a reddish brown with age. The constructivist effect on furniture design was widespread. It focused on true utilitarian forms that shied away from frou-frou ornamentation. These designs were simple, function oriented and designed majorly in liner or standard curvilinear patterns. The designs were based on convenience rather than ornamentation, so the forms were decidedly simple, but exceptionally unique. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Late 20th Century Anglo-Chinese Chairs with Caned Seats, Europe 1980s
Located in Utrecht, NL
The influence of Chinese design on the West has been subtle, almost by osmosis, but we can see references in much of western art and design. Much of Europe has long had a magpie tradition of taking from the different cultures it has come into contact with in its past, furniture being no exception. Similar to European Chinoiseries, Britain formulated an Anglo-Chinese style that copied Chinese models yet adhered to British fashions affecting furniture design. The resulting aesthetic is quite unique and has evolved much in the past decades as demonstrated by these armchairs. These solid, exotic wood chairs...

"Chaises Basses" Low Chairs by Charles Dudouyt, France 1930s
By Charles Dudouyt
Located in Utrecht, NL
Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in late 16th and early 17th century England, New England and Holland. The technique was carried on to the 20th century and was widespread in Europe as well, where craftsmen created durable pieces for various interiors and purposes. These chairs were designed by French designer, Charles Dudouyt, who originally created this pair of small carved chairs as ‘fireside’ chairs, hence the “chaises basses...
