About the Item
Josef Hillerbrand was a prominent German architect and designer in the mid-20th century era. He is best known for his work in the Deutsche Werkstätten, Munich. The Deutsche Werkstätten, like many contemporary workshops, was created out of a re-commitment to the craftsmanship that was sweeping through Germany during the Bauhaus era – at this workshop a community of artists created and promoted a sort of “mainstream modernity.”
This sofa fits within this modern realm thanks to its use of rounded, yet clean lines, and its functional design. The attention to detail in this piece is evident in the well-proportioned structure and thoughtful use of materials. The most striking feature is the sleek, stylish shape of the body, covered in luxurious upholstery. The fabric’s texture adds depth to the design, while the stripes give it a sense of movement. The three plush back cushions also offer plenty of comfort through their generous size. This sofa is framed by wooden accents that add warmth to the design and highlight the craftsmanship of the furniture created at the Deutsche Werkstätten. The pairing of the wood and the fabric is perhaps the most classic 20th century look that is inherently cosy and timeless. The body is supported by two sets of legs in a dark brown colour. This piece combines both boldness and subtlety, making it a lovely addition to any room. The fine sense of proportion, line tension and balance between the surfaces highlights the design prowess of Josef Hillerbrand.
From every single angle, this three-seater sofa offers stunning lines and a rich texture. Above all, furniture designers of the era believed that design could certainly be used to improve people's lives. Looking at this model, this was evidently a not too far-fetched ideal.

Alfred Christensen Three-Seater Sofa for Slagelse Møbelfabrik, Denmark 1940s
By Alfred Christensen
Located in Utrecht, NL
Danish Modern focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen known as cabinetmakers. Alfred Christensen’s present sofa in this style is a rare and exquisite example of this.
This sofa has the characteristic ‘open armrest’ design that showcases the high level craftsmanship and the beautiful walnut structure as well. Clean and pure lines define this model that are coupled with expert craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials and the requirements of the human body, adapting design to modern-day needs. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, Christensen maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. In consequence, this three-seater sofa has an elegant but still warm look thanks to its rounded edges and open execution. The only form of ornamentation - apart from the bent armrests - is the button tufting on the back. The light colour of the textural upholstery in combination with the dark walnut legs create an aesthetic that is perfect to bring a modern touch to any space.
While Danish designers, including Alfred Christensen, had many principles, above all, all designers...
