Early 19th Century Country Candle Stand or Stool solid elm, English Circa 1820

$587.68

About

This candle stand or stool is a good example of English Country furniture. The thick oval top is made of solid elm and has a lower chamfered edge. The legs are also made from elm and are well turned, splaying slightly outwards. The legs have slightly different turned detail which is not unusual as these pieces were made in the country workshop to serve a function, often from timber and turned pieces that were available at the time. Provenance: The style and form of the turning on the legs of country chairs and stools can often dictate the area of manufacture and sometimes the exact maker. Similar leg forms to this occur on chairs from the North East Midlands of England - See; The English Regional chair by Bernard Cotton, published by The Antique Collectors Club. This piece is beautifully patinated with a very good figure to the top. We date this piece to the early 19th century, Late Georgian period, circa 1820.
