Large Tribal Brown Hand-Carved Early 20th Century Ashanti Stool

About the Item

An exceptional and unusually large early 20th century African Ashanti hand-carved wood stool from Ghana featuring scalloped and geometric forms on one side with a stylized bird on the other which is the symbol of the word "Sankofa" and associated with the proverb, "It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten." The Sankofa bird, a frequent image in African art, further implies "looking at the past in order to build a better future." Besides being functional, this Ashanti stool with its rustic carving, its rich patina rarity of size can stand alone as a sculpture. Simultaneously simple yet modern, this piece would be a chic addition to any home incorporating a variety of styles including Traditional, Contemporary, Danish and Organic Modern.
