About the Item

This stool was developed as part of the research at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm from 1954 onward, attributed to Max Bill in collaboration with Hans Gugelot and Paul Hildinger. It was conceived as a versatile piece adapted to the needs of the school. The example shown here is a simplified version produced after 1962. Its construction uses plain, accessible materials: chipboard for the side panels and seat, and turned wooden dowels for structural crossbars. While certain versions featured a storage drawer, this one reflects a more essential approach where every part serves a clear, functional purpose. Whether used as a stool, a side table, or a modular storage element, it embodies Ulm's pedagogical ideals: minimal, economical, and didactic design, where form always follows function.
