About the Item

Jan Vanek Wingback Chair in Oak Bentwood and Original Upholstery – Prague, 1940s This large Wingback armchair, designed by Czech architect Jan Vanek in the 1940s, is reminiscent of the work of contemporary designer Jindrich Halabala. The chair features original upholstery and a gracefully crafted oak bentwood frame. While the solid oak frame shows minor signs of age and use, it remains in excellent original condition and exhibits a beautiful patina. This stunning wingback chair would make a striking addition to any interior space, whether a living room, family room, screening room, or office. It would also fit beautifully in hospitality or corporate environments, such as a boutique hotel lobby, cocktail bar, members' club, or luxury boutique. Influenced by his family's furniture company, Vanek studied woodworking. After a time in Germany, where he honed his skills at established firms in Munich, Stuttgart, and Heilbronn, he returned to former Czechoslovakia. He took over the family business, which became known in 1920 as Spojené Uměleckoprůmyslové Závody, or UP Závody. Vanek's early friendships and collaborations with architectural and design luminaries like Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Adolf Loos likely influenced his elegant style, exemplified by his 1930s bentwood chairs featuring arabesque curves in their arms and legs that create dynamic, open loops. True to Czech standards for uniformity, Vanek made few alterations to the design over decades of production, though he gradually modernized his frames. His 1950s models are more angular and industrialized, embodying a modern aesthetic. Choosing used mid-century design furniture is a sustainable option, allowing you to give these pieces a second, third, or even fourth life. Mid-century furniture is often crafted from high-quality materials designed to last, ensuring that these items endure over time. Many pieces carry a rich history, with signs of wear adding a glimpse into their previous owners' lives.
