About the Item

This impressive large Stollentruhe, also known as a Stollentroewe, is a large German storage chest crafted around 1580. Its distinctive construction, with massive upright corner posts—the so-called Stollen—gives the piece its characteristic silhouette and outstanding structural strength. Chests of this type belong to the earliest surviving examples of European furniture and are extremely rare today. Made entirely from solid oak, the chest features a warm, dark brown tone with a beautifully aged patina. The front is richly decorated with geometric carvings: diamond patterns composed of small punched motifs, floral rosettes, and circular designs, all hand-cut in the late Renaissance style. Above the panels runs a horizontal frieze with stylized ornaments, while the edge of the lid is finished with a finely gouged border, adding a touch of refinement to the robust design. A true focal point is the original wrought iron lock, now over 400 years old. It remains fully functional and is accompanied by its period hinges and locking mechanism. Inside, on one side, there is a small lidded compartment whose open lid can serve to support the chest’s main lid in the open position. On the opposite side, a built-in shelf is incorporated into the side wall for additional storage. These chests were typically commissioned by wealthy bourgeois households, affluent merchants, or members of the nobility. They were used to store valuable linens, garments, documents, and other important possessions—both for daily use and for safekeeping during travel or household moves. The construction, featuring through-tenon joinery, wide oak planks, and deep stiles, reflects the transitional phase from medieval to more structured Renaissance furniture-making. Despite its considerable age, this chest is in exceptional condition. It has been gently cleaned and treated with a fresh layer of protective wax in our workshop. This rare and historic Solitude is clean, solid, and ready for use—a truly striking piece full of history, craftsmanship, and character.
