Jacques Adnet, Four-door Macassar & Glass Bookcase, France, c. 1945

About the Item

With a career spanning many of 20th century's formative aesthetic movements, Adnet cuts a distinctive figure in the history of design. He strove to create beautiful pieces, which were nevertheless suited to everyday life. With his intriguing use of unusual materials, Adnet transcended the Art Deco tradition which nurtured him. Today, he is remembered for his elegant shapes and luxurious materials. Our bookcase is worthy of his enduring reputation. Featuring six solid legs, a frame of lush, dark Macassar ebony, and four symmetrical brass-detailed glass doors, it is a work of striking beauty and presence. Bibliography: Meubles et Décors, July-August 1945. An identical bookcase featured on page 9.
