About the Item

Silvio Cavatorta bookcase and storage unit, mahogany, brass, Italy, 1940s This elegant library is a striking example of Italian design, crafted by designer Silvio Cavatorta in the late 1940s. Executed in richly hued mahogany wood, the piece showcases Cavatorta's mastery of form and elegance. Its open, geometric structure features crossed supports, lending it a sculptural quality while maintaining an airy, lightweight appearance. The piece balances open shelving for display with closed compartments, which provides practical storage. The craftsmanship and refined materials highlight post-war Italian design, making this highboard a versatile and luxurious addition to any space. Silvio Cavatorta (1899-1957) was an Italian designer. His father, Eugenio Cavatorta founded the furniture and upholstery company Cavatorta in 1869. Silvio, one of thirteen children, started working for the family business after the First World War. He was the main designer for the Cavatorta business, the furniture was mainly intended for complete home or business furnishings. During the Second World War Silvio continued to work, even under German occupation. Silvio his son, Franco (born in 1925) studied to be an architect and graduated in 1950. During his university years he completed internships in the studios of Le Corbusier, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl and Sven Markelius. Franco Cavatorta was the one to introduce the new style, generally defined as 'Swedish', and took it in production in his fathers furniture factory. Kindly note that this piece is in good, used condition. The mahogany type used to make this piece does not require an export license.
