About the Item

Early 19th Century French Charles X Burl Fruitwood Buffet with Carrara Marble Top is an exquisite historical artifact from a bygone era when capable craftsmen had natural materials available in abundance that modern craftsmen can only dream about. Starting with the Carrara marble top, which provides a color-neutral elegant surface, obtained from the same region of the southern Alps from whence Michelangelo obtained his marble for statuary, the stone was cut to follow the mitered corners which is a design element that eliminates sharp edges. The top tier is defined by molding that wraps around all the way to the back side, and encompasses three drawers fitted with brass knobs and a single cast key guard. Below, three cabinets with framed panels open to reveal surprising storage, with a molded base underneath supported by finely cut corbel feet. Such a design heralded the tailored, stately elegance that the French made popular that extended through the Louis Philippe period and remains popular even today precisely because of its ability to blend with a wide variety of diverse decors. The burl veneering encompassing the entire exterior exhibits bird's eye aspects and a lighter, less dark caramel color that is also more in vogue today.
