17th Century South American Baroque Period Cassone

About the Item

A scarce Baroque period South American iron mounted carved wood chest, 17th century with later elements, full of beautifully aged antique character, distressed rustic charm, elegant warmth, with rich patina over the whole. Handmade in the 1600s, the smaller scale chest (cassone) having a wrought iron strap hinged rectangular shaped wooden top, over conforming well made solid wood box form chest, decorated with heavily carved foliate scroll flourish design, the flanks having hand forged iron handles, rising on fitted stretcher joined straight leg stand. Dimensions: 46" wide, 24" high, 17" deep. (116.8, 61, 43.2 cm) Provenance: Property from the Estates of Ramon Osuna (1937-2019) and Robert Lennon (1933-2021), Washington, D.C. Longtime Washington-area art dealers, Mr. Osuna was born in Havana and came to the Washington area soon after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959. He initially made his name as a dealer in contemporary art but gradually expanded into the Old Masters. With his longtime friend and partner Lennon, he owned galleries in Washington for many years and, at his death, also had Osuna Art & Antiques in Kensington, Maryland. For several years in the 2000s, he owned a gallery in a downtown Bethesda, Maryland. Robert Lennon was born in New York, NY and grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. In addition to co-owning the important gallery, Lennon was also a lawyer and admitted to the Mississippi Bar in 1964; President of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, 1958; President of National Orgnization of Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), 1970; Named Man of Year, City of District of Columbia, 1980; Chairman March of Dimes, Hattiesburg, 1967; Mayoral Election Committee, Washington, 1980, 84; Board of Directors Washington Cultural Alliance, 1986-87; Board of Directors Washington Review, 1985-87; Chairman New Arts Examiner, Washington, 1986-87; and he was with United States Army, 1952-55. Robert received his Bachelor of Science from the University Southern Mississippi, 1958; Bachelor of Laws from the University Mississippi, 1964; and Juris Doctor, University Mississippi, 1966. He was elected as a Member of Mississippi House of Representatives, Jackson, 1968-1972. Acquisition; Heritage Auction, Dallas, Texas. December 2021 Fine Furniture & Decorative Arts Signature Auction catalog. History: The early uses of an antique chest or coffer included storage of fine cloth, weapons, foods and valuable items. This outstanding example likely relates to the Spanish Empire's Colonial Conquest, which covered a huge area that included what are now Mexico, much of the American Southwest and California in North America, Central America, various parts of South America, and several Pacific Ocean archipelagos, namely the Philippines and Guam. A cassone is a kind of carved or painted chest associated with late Medieval and Renaissance era, especially in Italy. Cassones, also called marriage chests, or hope chests were often used to carry the dowry goods in a marriage ceremony. The cassone ("large chest") was one of the trophy furnishings of rich merchants and aristocrats from the Late Middle Ages onward. The cassone was the most important piece of furniture of that time. It was given to a bride and placed in the bridal suite. It would be given to the bride during the wedding, and it was the bride's parents' contribution to the wedding. Condition: Great shape overall, especially considering age. Strong, sturdy and structurally sound. Warm, rich color and patina, naturally distressed finish adds to the antique character and charm. Wear and tear consistent with age and use. Presents splendidly.
