About the Item

A visually commanding and richly detailed 19th-century Continental japanned cabinet on stand, likely of Austrian or southern German origin, lavishly painted with architectural vignettes and floral compositions. This romantic and historically evocative piece reflects the Grand Tour sensibility so prized by European aristocracy and American collectors of the mid-19th century. The cabinet’s front features a pair of doors painted with mirrored scenes of classical ruins—soaring arched porticos and fluted Corinthian columns rising amid lush trees and pastoral figures. These scenic panels are finely rendered with exceptional depth and narrative charm, executed in oils on highly figured golden-toned veneer. Painted side panels add to the rarity and depth of the piece: both flanks are decorated with further painted vignettes of ancient temples and monuments, including a circular rotunda adorned with bas-reliefs, a monumental urn, and fallen architectural fragments. The painter’s skill is evident in the shadowed forms, richly modeled foliage, and warm, moody skies—creating an immersive, 360-degree decorative experience. The doors open to reveal ten interior drawers, each adorned with individually painted floral sprays in saturated hues. Brass drop handles and pierced escutcheons complete the drawers, and the inside door panels feature vibrant floral bouquets, hand-painted with painterly finesse. The case is bound in fine pierced and engraved brass mounts, including strap hinges, escutcheons, corner guards, and side carrying handles—all retaining a rich patina. The cabinet rests on a later, well-matched stand with straight square legs and Chinese Chippendale-style fretwork spandrels. Dimensions: Cabinet: 30.75" W x 18.5" D x 25" H Overall (with stand): 32" W x 19" D x 56.75" H Condition: Good/Fair. Surface wear, scattered paint losses, minor veneer cracking and losses, and natural aging throughout, all consistent with age and use. Structurally solid and stable. The stand is later and shows sympathetic wear with losses to the veneer and fretwork. Key is retained and the locks are in working order. Provenance: Acquired during a lengthy world tour in the mid-19th century by a New York Social Register gentleman and his bride, likely purchased in Austria or northern Italy. This piece remained in the family for generations and exemplifies the elite taste for exotic yet classically inspired decoration. Stylistic Notes & Attribution This piece likely originated in Austria or southern Germany, where painted cabinetry and japanned finishes were favored in the Biedermeier and later historicist periods. The neoclassical ruin motif draws on 18th-century Italian vedute, while the floral interior decoration evokes Viennese painted furniture of the Wiener Werkstätte tradition. Comparable examples appear in museum collections and high-end European auctions, often attributed to anonymous regional workshops catering to cosmopolitan buyers.

Late 19th C., French Gothic Revival cabinet, with interior shelf and central door. Heavily adorned with carved panels to front and sides. The front is comprised of panels flanking a central door. To each side of the door are two beautifully carved panels. The door has brass hinges and escutcheon. It locks with the key retained. The carving is mirrored on both sides of the piece, each comprising five carved panels. The red undertones suggest that this is a chestnut rather than an oak piece. The overall structure owes much to the Gothic Revival movement of 19th century France, with a nod to Renaissance Revival. The door panel is dominated by a lovely example of Gothic tracery in the form of a half moon “window...
