About the Item

A scarce antique European religious polychromed gilt wood and cast iron mounted church altar tabernacle. Hand-crafted in the 19th century, high-quality solid wood and cast iron construction, in polychrome painted finish, Empire style, sculptural architectural form having arch pediment with pelicans (in medieval Europe, the pelican was thought to be particularly attentive to her young, to the point of providing her own blood by wounding her own breast when no other food was available. As a result, the pelican became a symbol of the Passion of Jesus and of the Eucharist since about the 12th century), over fluted pilaster columns flanking a single cabinet door embellished with sunburst chalice, the door opening to the location the church would have stored the Eucharist and/or their most important religious relics. Dimensions: (approx) 30" High, 17.75" Wide, 15.25" Deep Ideal size and proportions for a variety of different uses, including as a ecclesiastical decorative sculpture, centerpiece of a home shrine or pray worship room, chair side table, pedestal or plant stand, side cabinet. Condition: A superb museum quality example, in great original antique condition with beautifully aged warm distressed patina. Presents very well, retaining original antique character marks throughout. Wear consistent with age and indicative of use, including scattered losses. Strong, sturdy, stable, and structurally sound.

A magnificent large rare and most impressive Italian baldachin tabernacle altar niche / altarpiece. circa 1800 Exquisitely hand-crafted in Italy in the early 19th century, this extraordinary one of kind masterpiece originally a prominent altarpiece fixture in a Catholic church, typically displaying a Santo or Jesus altar figure statue inside. Exceptionally executed throughout, parcel gilt polychrome painted, gessoed and carved wood two-piece architectural baldachin form, with dome top vaulted ceiling, raised on eight fluted Corinthian columns, over a shaped platform base with elaborate molded frieze, further raised on integral bracket risers in marbleized faux marble paint decorated finish. Breathtaking visually striking aesthetic, very fine quality craftsmanship, lavishly decorated with extraordinary detail throughout, even the unseen interior of the dome profusely decorated with the most intricate painstaking hand applied 24k gold leaf ornamentation, the exterior in brillant gilded finish, enhanced by beautifully aged warm rich dark patina! A scarce French Provincial Louis XV (1715-1774) / Louis XVI (1774-1792) Period mixed wood religious oratory (prie-dieu / altar) Hand-crafted in France in the 18th century, with later 19th century elements, likely originating in the south of France / Mediterranean region, featuring pegged solid wooden construction of warm, rich fruitwood, chesnut, oak, and maple. Having a slant-front bureau with tall raised back decorated with three Renaissance Revival style high relief panels, the center depicting religious scene comprising Jesus and winged Saint, the side panels with foliate floral fruit pendant carvings, flanked by classical turned baluster-form columns, surmounted with highly stylized hand carved and turned finials. Over a slant-front with star parquetry, the hinged drop-front opens to reveal a distressed leather writing desk / lectern / pulpit on which the holy books can be laid open and allows to shelter the books, which were considered precious goods at that time.
